Description
Rubens Tube.
This apparatus is also known as the Standing Wave Flame Tube, or simply ‘Flame Tube’.
Demonstrates a standing wave and shows the relationship between sound waves and sound pressure.
Comprises a 1.7-metre long x 75mm dia. aluminium tube with a 5W speaker mounted in the hole at one end and the other end blocked except for a connection where gas can enter.
Along the tubes length are [approx.] 200 holes.
When gas is lit the flames dramatically show standing wave patterns created when the output of a signal generator is connected to the speaker.
