| ABBREVIATIONS | FOR PREPARED MICROSCOPES SLIDE SPECIMENS |
|---|---|
| CS (Cross-section) | The specimen was cut perpendicularly to its longest axis. |
| E | An inverted reversed image so specimen appears upside down and backwards. |
| LS (Longitudinal section) | A specimen cut lengthwise parallel to its longest axis. |
| MED (Median) | The slide features a section cut from the middle of the specimen. |
| RLS (Radial longitudinal section) | A cut made parallel to the long axis and along a radius of the specimen. |
| SEC (Section) | This is a general term for a thinly sliced section of a specimen. |
| SM or SMR (Smear) | The specimen, such as blood, was spread thinly across the slide. |
| SQ (Squashed) | A prepared specimen squashed between a slide and a coverslip. |
| ST (Stained) | Specimen treated with a dye stain to make its structures more visible. |
| TS (Transverse section) | An alternative term for a Cross-Section (CS). |
| VS (Vertical section) | A cut made along the vertical plane of the specimen. |
| WM (Whole mount) | Entire, intact specimen is mounted on the slide typically used for small organism parts. |

(Wikipedia excerpt: ..."...A microscope slide is a thin flat piece of glass, typically 75 by 26mm and about 1mm thick, used to hold objects for examination under a microscope. Typically the object is mounted (secured) on the slide, and then both are inserted together in the microscope for viewing. This arrangement allows several slide-mounted objects to be quickly inserted and removed from the microscope, labeled, transported, and stored in appropriate slide cases or folders etc.
Microscope slides are often used together with a cover slip or cover glass, a smaller and thinner sheet of glass that is placed over the specimen. Slides are held in place on the microscope's stage by slide clips, slide clamps or a cross-table which is used to achieve precise, remote movement of the slide upon the microscope's stage (such as in an automated/computer operated system, or where touching the slide with fingers is inappropriate either due to the risk of contamination or lack of precision)...")
